In an op-ed piece in the Chicago Sun-Times explaining his decision, Sheriff Tom Dart said that “too many times,” his deputies have arrived at foreclosed properties to find tenants who have indeed paid their rent. But the property owner hadn’t paid the mortgage, leading banks to foreclose on the property.
LoanWorkout.org has covered the new scam called “predatory renting” over the last year and it is finally getting more media attention. This has been going on all year and I should know, my landlord is being foreclosed on by Washington Mutual and it wasn’t until I confronted her (after weeks of dodged calls) that she admitted it.
She also told me that her husband left and he is no where to be found and they will be divorcing as soon as she can loacte him since he is the onyl one on title (yes, she doesn’t have the legal right to collect the money and she is an ex-Realtor). She concluded by saying, “Oh and by the way, can I have the lease money and just take the repairs you had done out of that money.”
I blew my lid and refused. Now I wait for for the Riverside Sheriff to come a knocking and serve me an my family. At least I am prepared for that day. Unlike the thousands of the new victims of the foreclosure crisis. Renters…
