Homeowner dunned to death, his widow believes

On the really difficult days, Darleen Burbridge talks to the urn that contains her husband’s ashes and sits on a mantel inside her New Springville home — the one she is trying to save from foreclosure even though she’s sure it put her husband in an early grave.

John Burbridge, 65, died suddenly at home in June. There was no autopsy, but the medical examiner said he most likely died of a heart attack.

It does not surprise Mrs. Burbridge.

When she was laid off from her job as an events planner at the Sheraton Hotel in Woodbridge, N.J., in February, her husband began calling Bank of America in hopes of modifying their loan and lowering the $2,800 mortgage payment that was fast becoming a hardship.

Despite countless calls and pleas for help, the couple got nowhere. They struggled to make payments, even borrowing from their son.
