Highlights included schemes promising access to economic stimulus checks and government grants, online offers to work from home using Google or Twitter, and promises of easy money as a mystery shopper, all of which ultimately cost the victims.

In Houston, the top scams centered on deceptive career counseling services, mortgage and foreclosure scams, and Medicare rip-offs, Parsons said. The career counseling schemes are the most irksome to BBB officials.

“While we at the bureau hate all scams, I have a special hot place in hell for the job scams,” Parsons said. “These are people that are trying to be gainfully employed, their unemployment is running out, and they’re blowing their last dollar.”
