Hats off to two Lorain County officials for helping uncover a mortgage fraud scheme. But more work needs to be done nationally and locally to protect vulnerable citizens from mortgage predators and foreclosure relief scams.
Operation Stolen Dreams, an on-going effort between the U.S. Justice Department and state and local officials to crack down on mortgage fraud crimes, has resulted in 1,200 people being charged since March 1.
The scorecard for northern Ohio, announced last Thursday by U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach, includes 21 people charged or convicted. Four men, three of them Lorain County residents, have pleaded guilty to charges of operating a fraudulent mortgage scheme to get loans worth $1.12 millions for 13 homes in Lorain and Elyria.
