Loan-modification scams are proliferating as the recession lingers and more Valley homes are foreclosed. Scammers are charging large fees to help troubled homeowners, but that help is available for free from non-profit counselors who can help negotiate with loan servicers.
Joy McClain, Tolleson’s community services director, has received reports from local seniors who say they have been contacted and offered city help.
“They’ve called us to find out more details, but we have none, because we’re not the ones making the calls,” McClain said. “As I’ve met with other community program directors, they are also saying they are getting calls.”
