The Obama administration’s much ballyhooed (and often maligned) Home Affordable Modification Program, or HAMP, has provided funds for mortgage servicers for loan modifications.
But some lenders have been overloaded by requests, and many consumers report difficulty navigating the system.
Doug Robinson of the nonprofit housing assistance agency Neighborhood Works, recommends not just contacting your lender, but seeking help from a loan modification expert.
“It’s belts and suspenders,” he said. “Call your lender on your own and contact the nonprofit.”
