From owners to renters, foreclosure is complete

We are officially squatters. Our home sold at auction and a real estate agent has come by to discuss the “cash for keys” program.

That seems weird to me. Someone wants to pay us to leave the home that we no longer own? Our rental contract is signed, and next week we shove our lives into a truck and start over. There is a lot to be said, good and bad, for this experience.

The crawling feeling of failure will linger along our spines for a while, I suspect.

Foreclosure is failure on a grand scale: we have failed our family, our home, our lender and our community. We can’t duck away from this.

On the other hand, life has given us an opportunity to break our inertia and push the reset button. We have been living for so long at the furthest extent of our finances, time and emotions that it has been like eating, working and sleeping on the rack.
